about

I was struggling to write about this music, it's by far the most personal stuff I've made and somehow being that close to it makes it difficult for me to describe, in a lot of ways I don't really know how it happens.

Fortunately my friend Laurie – who has to write about people's music all the time and knows mine in its many forms – was kind enough to agree to step in. Embarrassing (and gratefully received!) plaudits aside, I think he sums it up perfectly:

‘The Something Puffs’ grabs Matt’s humble, joyful feel for the fastidious, slippery, and straight-up massive and smashes it into something like a band, with a front man who's sometimes-stadium, sometimes-vaudeville, a medium of the glory and poignance of his native suburbs.

Wig-out guitars, boss-level synths, convulsing kit, cello hero. These 3 tunes radiate a deep love for the pleasure of playing, and as deep a love for the madcap ways different lines can join, splinter, battle, or froth on.

A blissfully boiled-down push and pull between the heart and the head, mess and maze, everything you thought it could be and everything it could be.
